Once you’ve done your research into the company, prepare a shortlist of questions to ask the interviewer. Thoughtful questions show you’re interested in the company and works to build some rapport too. During face-to-face interviews, use your in-person communication skills to your advantage. Keep good eye contact with the interviewer, speak clearly and concisely, show your enthusiasm for the role, and remain upbeat.

Virtual Interviews

During virtual interviews, your appearance is just as important as it is in a face-to-face interview. Ensure you’re wearing a suitable outfit and that your hair is tidy. Think about what the interviewer sees behind you, and if the view is potentially distracting, try using one of the blank backgrounds available.

Keep your attention on the screen during the interview, and don’t be distracted by other things around you. Ensure that you will not be disturbed by pets, children, the doorbell, or any people entering the room during the interview.

Telephone Interviews

Telephone interviews can be tricky as the interviewer cannot see you, and you cannot see them, so it can feel hard to build rapport. As you can only use your voice, speak as clearly as you can and keep answers concise without rambling or including irrelevant information.

It goes without saying that for an interview, being on time is vital. If it’s a face-to-face interview, plan how long it will take you to get to the interview location and leave plenty of time to do so. If it’s a telephone or virtual interview, be ready before the allotted time and test your equipment or set up in advance.
